Every Child’s Voice Counts

Welcome to the 29th year of the YABBA Awards!

When I did that little calculation in my head I had to go back and check it was right – and it is true!  The YABBA Awards were established by a dedicated team of volunteers back in 1985 with the single purpose of having children vote for their favourite Australian book.

The goal of YABBA in 2014 is exactly the same.  Providing children a voice on the books they think are the best and they want to reward.  That is why a few years ago YABBA adopted the tagline –Recommend, Read, Rate and Reward Australian Books.

But this is where all YABBA Members need to help.  The YABBA Council has spent hours and maybe days over the years discussing the patterns on nominations, votes and member participation.  The conclusion to me is simple.  The volunteer YABBA Council can’t gather 50,000 or 100,000  or 250,000 nominations and votes on our own.  It is only the collective work of all members that can work towards those numbers.

So here is our rally cry for 2014 – Every Child’s Voice Counts.  The YABBA Awards needs all students at member schools to nominate and vote this year.

I hope that you will join in our objective of amplifying the maximum number of student voices.

David Linke
YABBA President
