Each year the children of Victoria, New South Wales and the Northern Territory are asked to recommend their favourite Australian book. These books are then collated to become the annual shortlist.
The 40 books that make up the shortlist are the most popular Australian children’s books as determined by the children themselves – so we know that children love them.
The voting process is used to find the book that children think is the best – where best is their own personal criteria.

Some Voting Strategies
Fast Form
Display the shortlisted titles with voting forms attached, filled out with the book’s details, so students can simply write their name on the form and place it in a conspicuously displayed voting box.
Election Day
An “election day” promotion, where students are able to peruse the nominated books and be photographed placing their ballot in the voting box. Photos can then be used for a screen slideshow or printed photo display leading up to the awards announcement.
Win A Book
Run an internal competition where students write down their winner predictions and seal them in envelopes. Once the YABBA’s have been announced the first correct random entry drawn receiving a copy of the book from your school.
